Everything you need to know about RCI Marine's Chief Mate COC coaching — Phase 1, Phase 2, Orals, batches and enrollment.
RCI Marine (Rashmi Coaching Institute), Trusted Since 1984, is a Meerut-based institute specializing in Chief Mate COC (Certificate of Competency) exam preparation. We conduct live online Zoom classes covering Phase 1 (Navigation & Stability) and Phase 2 (Stability & Engineering Knowledge), along with separate Orals preparation, for officers preparing for their Chief Mate exams under DGS/MMD, UK MCA, AMSA, and MPA (Singapore).
Our institute is based in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, but our classes are fully online via Zoom, so students from any port city or location across India can join live sessions without relocating.
Classes are led by Chief Officer Deepak Gupta, who holds a Chief Mate FG Certificate of Competency and brings hands-on tanker, VLCC, and LNG ship sailing experience along with DP2 offshore background, translating real sea experience into exam-focused teaching.
We maintain a 92% student pass rate, offer small-batch live interactive Zoom classes rather than pre-recorded videos, and back every batch with our RCI Consecutive Support Promise.
If a student does not clear their exam after completing a batch with us, they can attend the very next consecutive batch at no additional cost, ensuring continued support until they succeed.
Phase 1 covers five subjects, including Navigation, Stability (Naval Architecture), and other written papers as per the DGS Chief Mate syllabus. Our live classes are structured subject-wise for focused preparation.
Navigation and Stability are consistently the most failed subjects in the Chief Mate written exam because they demand strong conceptual clarity in calculations (like Long by Chron, Mer Pass, GZ curves, and stability tables) rather than rote learning — an area where our teaching method focuses heavily on step-by-step problem solving.
Based on our experience training hundreds of candidates, a realistic and thorough preparation timeline is around 4–5 weeks for both subjects combined, with daily live classes of 2.5–3 hours, depending on the student's sea experience and prior conceptual base.
Students receive structured PDF notes, topic-wise problem sets, and reference material aligned with standard textbooks like Capt. H. Subramaniam's Nutshell Series and Capt. C.L. Dubey's Advanced Ship Stability.
Yes, our study material and classes are regularly updated to include the latest SOLAS and MARPOL amendments so students are exam-ready with current regulations.
Phase 2 focuses on advanced Stability and Engineering Knowledge, including Naval Architecture topics taught progressively across levels, building on the foundation covered in Phase 1.
Yes, you can join Naval Architecture 2 classes without having cleared Naval Architecture 1 first. It will require some extra effort on your part, but our instructor will brief you during the classes on how to bridge any conceptual gaps.
Our Orals batches are designed to help candidates "Think Like a Chief Officer" — covering Function 1, 2, and 3 scenarios for MMD India, along with real-time mock oral sessions and situational judgment training based on actual shipboard experience for UK MCA, AMSA (Australia), and MPA (Singapore) as well.
Both. We combine conceptual explanation with simulated mock oral sessions so students get comfortable with the pressure and format of the actual Orals exam.
Yes, you can join for Orals coaching even if you prepared Phase 1 elsewhere or have already cleared it.

All classes are conducted live via Zoom, allowing real-time doubt-clearing and interaction with the instructor — not passive pre-recorded videos.
We intentionally keep batches limited in size to ensure each student gets individual attention and doubt resolution during live sessions.
Please contact us regarding our policy on session recordings or makeup classes for students who miss a live session due to sea duty or personal reasons.
While we don't offer a monetary refund, our RCI Consecutive Support Promise ensures you can rejoin the next batch at no extra cost if you're unsuccessful, so your investment continues to work for you until you pass.
Second Officers who have completed the requisite sea time as per DGS/MMD regulations and hold the prerequisite qualifications are eligible to appear for the Chief Mate FG written and oral exams.
RCI Marine is a private coaching institute preparing candidates for the DGS-conducted Chief Mate COC exams; we are not a government body but a dedicated exam-preparation institute with a strong track record.
Since all classes are live online via Zoom, officers can join based on their availability, and can also access material for self-study during periods of limited connectivity — please check with us for specifics on internet requirements at sea.
We maintain a 92% pass rate among students who complete our structured Phase 1 and Phase 2 programs.
Yes, we're happy to share testimonials and connect prospective students with alumni who've successfully cleared their Chief Mate exams through RCI Marine.
